TEAM TALK
The Challenge of Ouninpohja

Letter from SWRT
7 August 2004

The Ouninpohja stage is famous for a huge jump located 6km from the start line, close to a landmark yellow house. Spectators measure the length of each jump and mark the distance with stakes by the roadside. Markko Martin holds the record for the longest jump. In 2003 he travelled 57 metres in the air at a speed of 171kph

The highest average speed recorded through Ouninpohja in 2003 was 129kph. The highest actual speed recorded by a Subaru team car was 198kph.

SWRT engineers have calculated that the average distance a car travels in the air after a jump is 10 metres. There are around 50 jumps included in Ouninpohja so a driver can expect to cover 500 metres of the stage in the air. That's 15 seconds airborne, or 1.5 per cent of the whole stage.

Subaru co-driver Jarmo Lehtinen:
"The challenge for the co-driver is to convey all the information before a jump to allow a driver to set up correctly and land in exactly the right place on the other side. There's a lot of information to say in a short amount of time making this the most difficult event of the Championship for a co-driver. I also read my pace notes early for another reason - sometimes when we land heavily after a jump, the air is forced out of my lungs which prevents me from speaking for a moment."

Subaru driver Mikko Hirvonen:
"For a driver it's all about knowing how to take a jump. The correct driving line is critical and it's important that you brake just before and then go flat out over it. If you brake just in front of the jump the car will quite probably land on its nose and collect some damage."

On the Bottle!
SWRT get a Corona Extra Pair of Hands in Finland!

Corona Extra, the official beer supplier to the Subaru World Rally Team have brought in some extra help for the boys in blue this weekend!

Alongside the traditional hostesses, the team have been joined by a 3m high walking Corona Extra beer bottle!

Word from the technicians is that while a few bottles of Corona Extra make a refreshing and ideal end to a hard day spent working on the Subaru Imprezas of Petter & Mikko, our 'new team member' is just a bit too big to fit underneath the car during a 20 minute service!
