What's your role with team?
It's split into two really. I look after the drivers and everything connected to their physical performance on events, as well as all the members of the team. For the drivers, the job involves managing their training before, during and after events as well as organising their nutrition to promote general well-being and prevent any illness and/or injury.
How long have you worked for Subaru?
I've been doing this particular role for a year now. Before that, I worked as the company's staff health and fitness trainer for a couple of years and before that for a consultancy setting up health awareness programmes as well as a freelance trainer for various sports people.
We're just about to travel to Monte Carlo, what have you been up to in the 'off-season'?
We've used the time to carry out full assessments on Petter Solberg and his co-driver Phil Mills to see how their fitness is. They've come out of a hard season, so it's important to assess what it's taken out of them. We reviewed the whole of 2004 and looked to see if we can make any improvements for the year ahead. For 2005 we have two new drivers, Stéphane Sarrazin and Chris Atkinson, who have already started their reviews. This year we're also assessing the whole of the on-event team so that everyone gets the advantage. We've been carrying out reviews of every member looking at their current health and individual goals. Our aim is to get through all 80 members of staff before Monte Carlo!
Sounds like a large job, why have you decided to assess the whole team?
The most important thing is that everyone stays fit for the whole season - not just the drivers. A lot of the team will be doing at least ten events this year so we need to make sure they're able to cope with doing every event and then being able to enjoy their lifestyle when they return.

What sort of tests are you carrying out?
We're doing medical assessments to get an overview of everyone's general health, which involves basic medial tests to check blood pressure, lung function and cholesterol levels as well as cardiac assessments. From there we can do a fitness assessment, which is optional, before putting recommendations forward to help them achieve a healthier lifestyle.
Are all teams doing a similar thing do you think?
Most teams know the importance of looking after their drivers and will have some type of training programme set up for them, but I don't know about team members. I'd say it's likely that Subaru is one of the few assessing the entire team, but team members are a vital cog and are as important as the drivers in my mind, so it's good to focus on everyone.
What's your favourite thing about the job?
Definitely getting to know all the Subaru team on a one to one basis, doing this job you find you get meet everyone. It's strange because there are some people that you'd never be able to talk to on a certain level, but this job really opens the door. I also love the travelling and working as part of the team. I've always loved motorsport and it's great to meet all the Subaru team members that you see on TV. Everyone's really eager and really keen, so it's stays motivating.
And the worst?
The jet lag! Getting up at around three in the morning after going to bed at midnight can be tough, but to be honest there's going to be downsides in every job. I don't see anything as being that bad.
And finally, tell us something about Petter that we don't know…
For some tests Petter has to strip down to his underwear and he has got the most shocking array of boxer shorts that I've ever seen! Although he'll kill me for saying that!
