In the 1991 season, the Legacy got off to a strong start when Alen took third place at the season's first event, the Swedish Rally. But this highlight was followed by a string of defeats, and SUBARU wasn't able to place among the top contenders. Alen's continual complaint about the Legacy at the time was "No engine, no power." To solve the problem, SUBARU decided to redesign the injection system in time for the season's last event, the RAC Rally. There were three SUBARU entries in this final RAC rally. The starters, in addition to Alen, were veteran Ari Vatanen and new sensation Colin McRae, who had captured the UK Rally championship title that year in a Legacy. Vatanen finished in fifth place, while Alen and McRae retired. However, the design change dramatically increased the Legacy's engine performance, and the altered model suddenly started to shine in the 1992 season.
