1992 saw the introduction of the two-driver team of Vatanen and McRae. In this year SUBARU entered six of the 14 rallies, rather than staging a full attack. Within these limits, SUBARU followed a strategy of focusing on gravel rallies that demonstrated the Legacy's potential.
McRae quickly lived up to his reputation as a gifted driver, taking second place at the Swedish Rally, and going on to amaze observers with skills rivaling those of the established top drivers. The Legacy made another strong showing in the season's final rally, when Vatanen took second place. Although it had yet to win a WRC rally, it had proved that it had evolved into a top-class performer.
