In the 1994 season, SUBARU kept McRae on the team and added two-time world champion Carlos Sainz. SUBARU had started its bid to become the year's WRC champion. Sainz was recognized for his vehicle development skill, and his addition to the SUBARU team represented a great opportunity to increase the Impreza's potential.
In the opening race at Monte Carlo, Sainz placed third in an excellent start to the season. In the full-tarmac Rally 4 Tour de Corse, Sainz followed the top contender from start to finish, ending a close second. And in the Acropolis Rally, Sainz's Impreza was able to handle the harsh road surface, proving its superiority over others that were forced to drop out. With this first place finish, the Impreza finally recorded its first victory. On top of that, at Round 7 in New Zealand, McRae gained his first WRC 2 victory in a year, following his retirement from a prior rally. In this year, SUBARU placed second in the Manufacturers' Title and Sainz was second in the Drivers' Title. With these two achievements, SUBARU began more and more to demonstrate its modernity.
