SUBARU entered the 1998 WRC season seeking a fourth consecutive Manufacturers' Title victory, but luck was against it. The season's first round (Monte-Carlo) got off to a fairly good start, with McRae finishing third and Liatti fourth. McRae then went on to win Rounds 4 (Portugal), 6 (Tour de Corse) and 8 (Acropolis), and all observers felt sure that SUBARU would win its fourth consecutive WRC. However, beset by rain at the New Zealand and Finland, a puncture at the San Remo, and a turbo problem just when McRae had moved into first place at the Australia, SUBARU's luck ran completely out. Ultimately the season ended without a single victory for SUBARU in the second half, with SUBARU finishing third in the Manufacturers' Title, McRae placing third in the Drivers' Title, and Liatti finishing the season in seventh place.
