Rd.7 SUGO SUPER TAIKYU RACE - Sportsland SUGO 10/5 - 6
Eifel Dunlop Impreza takes third victory this year!
Championship left undecided until the final round in Fuji

Super Taikyu Series Rd. 7 took place at Sportsland SUGO in Miyagi prefecture, and Eifel Dunlop Impreza won its third victory this season, decreasing the gap between the top to 4 points.

Qualify
The qualify was held under fine weather. At 2:10 pm, the session was held for 40 minutes with 39 cars total, including the 10 cars from Class 2. The class winner of round 3 Suzuka and round 4 Motegi, Car #2 Eifel Dunlop Impreza with drivers Toshihiro Yoshida and Kazuo Shimizu qualified with 1'33"10 positioning themselves at 3rd in their class (12th place overall). #57 Gram Lights SweetGDB with drivers Masazumi Ohashi, Kunisuke Sadakata and Shin Kawashima qualified in 7th in class (19th overall) with 1'33"010.

Race
The morning of the race day was cloudy and slightly chilly, but 28.600 enthusiastic fans filled the field of SUGO. At 12:38, the race started for 135 laps. Yoshida started the race for Eifel Dunlop Impreza, keeping his 3rd place positions. Meanwhile, Ohashi started for Gram Lights SweetGDB in his hometown race, and they too kept their position at the beginning of the race.

After first 20 laps, #11 Puma Lancer who is leading the championship and was currently leading the class began to slow down. Soon, they were overtaken by #20 RS Ogawa Lancer, and were overtaken by #2 Impreza on lap 31 which led the Impreza to 2nd place. Impreza soon got hold of #20 RS Ogawa Lancer as their tires started to wear out, and on lap 52, they reached the top of class 2. #57 Gram Lights Impreza changed returned to their pit on lap 57 and the driver switched to Sadakata. However, after 8 laps, the hub on the let front broke, and was forced to retire the race.

#2 Eifel Dunlop Impreza waited until lap 67 at the very limit of their fuel. The driver switched to Shimizu, and the car returned to the course keeping their positions. Unfortunately, during this pit stop, the pit crew left the tires standing as they placed them for the change. This is an act of breach to the regulation set for Super Taikyu (the tires for change must be placed horizontally), and #2 Impreza was black flagged for penalty. Shimizu took 10 seconds pit stop, and the car lost the position to 2nd in class.

Shimizu kept constant laps, but still sought for chance to recover even after they were overtaken by #20 RS Ogawa Lancer. Meanwhile, #26 Endless Lancer leading the class backed off from mechanical problems. When #20 RS Ogawa Lancer returned to the pit for the second pit stop on lap 101, #2 Eifel Dunlop Impreza had recovered to the top again. At this point, the team changed their plan of taking the second pit stop for refuel at the end of the race, and the car kept the position to the end, winning for the third time this season. This victory greatly reduced the gap between the top in the series ranking to 4 points from previously 20, leaving them with enough chance to seek for the upsetting Championship on the final round.

The points on the right are not updated and are before round 7 as it is announced by the organizer. (As of morning of Oct.7).

Quote from Kazuo Shimizu
"I brought down the rpm of the engine for the fuel when I was driving. In the end, if there was more than a minute gap (before #20 RS Ogawa Lancer in 2nd place), I could've returned to pit for fuel and speeded up, but there was only 40 seconds. We only had one pit stop but tires lasted, and fuel efficiency control owes to our team effort. You see, we are working so well. We'd definitely win the final round!"
