SUBARU drivers Mark Higgins and Wyn Humphries both entered the event in an optimistic mood, following their solid points-scoring performances on the first round, the Pirelli International.
Leg one predictably saw championship favourites Guy Wilks, Mark Higgins and Gyndalf Evans battle for the lead. Wilks' challenge came to an abrupt end on the final stage of the first day when he crashed into a field, damaging the radiator on his Mitsubishi. The battle between Higgins and Evans couldn't have been closer, the Subaru driver leading by just 1.3 seconds at the end of leg one.
Higgins maintained his lead in the Group N class on the second leg, and was even able to ease off on the final stages of the rally when rival Evans experienced gearbox problems. The 20 points gained from first place propelled Higgins into the championship lead on 38 points.
Competing in only his second International rally, Wyn Humphries secured another top ten finish, bringing his Impreza home seventh among the BRC runners and picking up 12 championship points. The result moves Humphries up to second in the championship behind Stobart Teg Sport teammate Higgins, making it a one-two for Subaru.
There was further good news for Subaru drivers on the event, Eugene Donnelly and Tim McNulty finishing the rally first and second overall in their Impreza World Rally Cars.
The third round of the championship, the Isle of Man International Rally, commences on July 19th, with championship leader Mark Higgins competing on his home event, having grown up on the island. Higgins will be looking to record back-to-back victories on the event for SUBARU, having taken the honours in 2006 driving an N12 Impreza from Prodrive.
