Toshi extends lead
Leg2
Event News 21 Jun. 2003
Toshi Arai increased his lead on the second day of the Rally of Cyprus and is now over two minutes in front of nearest challenger Martin Rowe in the Production World Rally Championship class.
Tackling a further eight stages near the resort town of Limassol, Toshi and co-driver Tony Sircombe were never headed in their SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STi.
And in an impressive display of SUBARU 's reliability the marque has a stranglehold on the top three places in the class, with third placed Stig Blomqvist four and a half minutes ahead of the first Mitsubishi.
"It's been a tough day," said Toshi. "I feel like I've had a huge workout in the gym!"
Toshi's only problem has been the continuation of the power steering problems he suffered on the first leg.
At the long service at the end of the day the Subaru Production Rally Team mechanics changed the steering box pump, but the "heavy" steering returned during the second day's first stage.
A later change of the steering box oil did not help matters either.
"I've got sore arm, back and stomach muscles," said Toshi. "This must be the worst rally not to have the proper use of power steering. There are so many corners, just one after another all the time. You don't get a chance to have a rest on the straights. There aren't any!"
Despite the setback, Toshi steadily more than doubled his overnight lead and is now 2 minutes and five seconds in front of Englishman Martin Rowe, who has nearly 1 minute 46 seconds in hand over Blomqvist.
"We can certainly drive conservatively tomorrow," said Toshi. "But we've still got six hard stages. Lots of people have been having problems, so nothing is guaranteed yet."
