Rallye Monte-Carlo stage summaries with Glenn Macneall

Glenn Macneall talks us through the tarmac stages of Rally Monte Carlo.
18 January 2007

SS1 : Saint Jean-En-Royans - Col De Lachau (28.52km)

This is the only stage where we've seen any snow this year, but only a tiny amount. Monte Carlo is normally a snowy rally, but we'll be treating it like a normal asphalt rally this year. The big thing about this stage is that it's run at night time. I can't remember the last time we actually did a night stage, other than a super special. It's a reasonable length, and the last time it was run was 1988, so it's new for everybody in the rally. It's very wide, at least two lanes in most places, and quick.

SS2 : La Cime Du Mas - Col De Gaudissart (17.88km)

The second one is tricky. It's quite open to begin with, but it gets narrower - it's not a flowing piece of road, but very technical. The last few kilometres are run on an old forestry road, which is slightly downhill, making it difficult.

SS3 / 6 : Saint-Pierreville - Antraigues (46.02km)

This is longest stage of the event, and it's got a bit of everything. There's a long climb in there, with a downhill section after that. It's narrow, with a mountain one side and a sheer drop on the other.

SS4 / 7 : Burzet - Lachamp Raphael (16.48km)

This stage is wider than the previous one. It's all uphill, but it's very fast. As we climb quite high, the last section is very foggy. It was during recce, and we've been warned by the locals that fog is common on this section of the stage.

SS5 / 8 : Saint-Martial - Beleac (12.81km)

This one is similar to the first stage in terms of width and speed. It's not as quick as stage four, and is much flatter. There are a few little villages that we drive through, and it goes through a few fields, although it's a short stage. It's quite scenic at the start!

SS9 / 12 : Labatie D'Andaure - Lalouvesc (19.67km)

The first running of this stage will be done early in the morning, when it'll actually be fairly dark. The top guys will drive it before the sun comes up, with the rest of the field doing it in the light. It runs along the bottom of the valley, mostly under tree cover.

SS10 / 13 : Saint-Bonnet-Le-Froid - Saint-Bonnet-Le-Froid (25.93km)

This stage is very, very quick. It's 26km, and in 1996 the fastest car did it in 13 minutes. That was 11 years ago, and I suspect the cars have got a little bit quicker, so we could be beating that record. It's wide and smooth, and it'll be very fast. It's almost a complete circuit because it starts and ends in the same village.

SS11 / 14 : Lamastre - Saint-Barthelemy-Grozon (18.76km)

This one is very narrow, making it one of the trickiest stages on the rally. It's very technical, in contrast to the previous stage, so the average speed will be a lot lower. Chris will adapt quickly from the previous stage to suit this one.

Super Special Stage : Monte Carlo (2.8km)

This stage runs through Monte Carlo on part of the Formula 1 circuit. It will be good for the fans, and there'll be large crowds. We will recce it on Sunday morning, so we don't know exactly what to expect but it should look spectacular, and it's certainly a good way to end the rally.
