Rally Mexico stage summaries with Phil Mills

After Completing The Pre-event Recce, Petter's Co-driver Phil Mills Gives His Verdict On This Year's Mexico Stages.
8 March 2007

SS1 / SS4 Alfaro (23.06km)

We last used this stage on the inaugural Rally Mexico back in 2004, but it's changed since then. Almost one kilometre has been chopped off the start, and roughly four kilometres off the end.

SS2 / SS5 Ortega (29.66km)

Most of this is familiar territory, although last year this was known as Guanajuato. It's the highest stage of the rally, peaking at 2737 metres above sea level. It starts very fast for about 18km with lots of long crests across the top of the mountains. There are some big dips and jumps too and one river crossing until we turn right at a narrow junction. After this point it is downhill all the way to the finish. Although there are some flowing corners, there are lots of culverts on the side and you've got to be very careful. It can be hard on brakes. The finish is different and it is slightly longer than 2006.

SS3 / SS6 El Cubilete (17.88km)

El Cubilete is possibly the fastest stage of the event, practically all fifth and sixth gear corners. The start has been moved 3.7km down the road for this year's rally. There's a good landmark in this one: a tight hairpin left in front of the famous angel monument in the town of Cubilete near the finish.

SS7 / SS8 / SS15 / SS16 / SS20 Nextel Superspecial (4.42km)

This classic Superspecial was new for 2006 and has been retained for this season. There are lots of big jumps and watersplashes and it is great for the spectators. It's run on a motor racing circuit on the outskirts of Leon.

SS9 / SS12 Ibarrilla (30.20km)

We start the second leg of the rally with a 30km stage that loops round from Ibarrilla to Mesa de Reyes, just to the north of Leon. We used this test in 2004 in the same format.

SS10 / SS13 Duarte (23.75km)

This one is identical to 2006. It is possibly the most twisty stage of the rally, because almost all of the bends are 90-degrees. After 5km the road opens out across a mountain, but it's still twisty and technical all the way to the finish. There are a couple of steep climbs in there. Almost every corner has a rock on the outside or the inside and it's very easy to make a mistake, especially because the road is so narrow. The end of the stage is at an extremely high altitude - well above 2400m.

SS11 / SS14 Derramadero (23.27km)

After a very tight stage, we head a short distance west to a particularly quick one, at least at the beginning. It starts on a road which has a hard rocky base and we run flat-out for 15km before turning left onto a medium-fast road with lots of big drainage ditches that run along the side. There are huge jumps and dips and you have to be very careful. Near the finish of this stage there's a well-known hairpin.

SS17 Leon (16.29km)

Now we're onto the third and final leg of the rally. Although there was a stage named Leon last year, it was different to this one, because it uses parts of roads also featured on the route in 2004 and 2005.

SS18 Guanajuatito (23.34km)

And this stage uses part of the test that was called Leon last year! It is 15km shorter than 2006 though. Whereas SS17 had taken us up a mountain, this one brings us back down the other side. It's mainly twisty and technical. The start is on a piece of road halfway through SS9/12, Ibarrilla, but soon joins a different track that takes us further north. Then we turn south again and finish just before a junction where the road rejoins the one used for SS9/12.

SS19 Comanjilla (18.01km)

All that's new about this test is the name - last year it was called Silao. It's the last 'proper' stage of the rally and is very difficult. The stage starts uphill before changing to an open, flowing road 4km from the start. After 5km we join the road used in SS11/14, Derramadero, with its deep drainage channels to the side of the road and high jumps. After this we head back to Leon to finish the rally with another blast through the Super Special.
