Red Bull GRC Indianapolis – Day 2
Sunday got off to a great start for SRTUSA at Red Bull GRC in Indianapolis. During Heat 2A Patrik Sandell and teammate Chris Atkinson were out front battling with Tanner Foust who despite finishing in front was later assessed a penalty for leaving the joker lane too early. This put Atkinson and Sandell in positions 1 and 2. In the semi-final, Atkinson once again took 2nd place and commented: “We tried to stay with Scott Speed early on; I gave him a little nudge in the gravel, but couldn’t quite catch him. Still only 1.7 seconds off the win there; not too far away. The car was really good and our finish put us in the front row for the final.” Unfortunately, Patrik Sandell was forced to retire early in the semi-final due to a driveshaft failure.
In the Final at Red Bull GRC Indianapolis, things did not go as planned. When describing what happened Patrik Sandell said: “A very rough final, there was a lot of crashing and damage during the first couple of laps, which didn’t work in our favor getting pushed around a bit in the back. After that I was doing good laps, catching the guys in front, but not enough to pass them. Not happy with 7th as we definitely had speed for much much more this weekend. It’s unfortunate that this is part of rallycross, so we’ll just have to go on to the next one.”
Chris Atkinson added: “Obviously disappointing to not convert a front row start into a podium. We had a bit of a technical problem just before the Final and couldn’t get away from the line. At least it’s a few points and not a DNF. It’s just disappointing with Heat wins today and being right up there with the VW’s in the Semi, then definitely having an easy shot at third of fourth.”
The Red Bull Global Rallycross Series continues next month in Atlantic City with another Double-Header event August 12-13th.
